Somerset Chamber Choir presents: Summer Gold
The Somerset Chamber Choir will be performing Sir John Rutter’s happy Gloria in honour of his 80th birthday. The work is full of brass fireworks and happy choral writing. Rutter’s music is loved by everyone because it has catchy melodies and a positive mood.
James Whitbourn’s moving Son of God Mass is also part of the concert. It was written for choir, organ, and soprano saxophone, and Classic Today has called it “a gem, a masterpiece.” This music is very moving and always pays attention to the words. It can be quiet and mysterious, or it can soar and be joyful.
James MacMillan’s Summae Trinitati and Gerald Finzi’s God is Gone Up will also have a lot of drama, with brass and organ fanfares. These pieces will go well with Paul Mealor and Cecilia McDowall’s works, which are more peaceful and reflective.
With Southwark Cathedral organist Simon Hogan and Rachael Parvin, Head of Guildhall Young Artists Taunton and former student of multi-award-winning saxophonist John Harle, the renowned all-female trombone group Bones Apart will make this powerful program shine. They will lead a stellar brass ensemble whose members have played with many major national orchestras, with musicians like Jamie Cullum, Sting, and Tom Jones, and in movie scores from Skyfall to Harry Potter!
Don’t miss this evening of great British music, performed by one of the best choirs in the county and a group of world-class musicians.
